This capsule collection examined the link between creativity and mental illness through the lens of Spanish artist, Fransisco Goya and his series called the 'Black Paintings.' 

 

After thorough research on the ‘Black Paintings’ and analyzing several video essays as well as the paintings themselves, I created a collection representing the struggle of Goya's life and how his internal dialogue manifested through his art. His story is something that I personally found to be relatable in how he expressed his despair. I wanted to show the weight of his worries and depression through the bulkiness of the garments. Goya was also suspected to have a form of anxiety that I illustrated through accessories that are constrictively wrapped around the chests and waists of figures.
